"Black Friday and Cyber Monday: Mobile Users Shop in Droves"
------------------------------------------------------------
Novarra reports that mobile phone web traffic to retailer and
shopping info web sites on Black Friday increased twelve-fold
and more than doubled on Cyber Monday compared to online
shopping traffic from mobile phones before the start of the
holiday shopping season.
Novarra, which delivers mobile internet access to two thirds of
U.S. mobile phone users and over one billion globally, sampled
web traffic through its deployments for a variety of U.S. and
U.K. retailers, including Abercrombie, Argos, Asos, Best Buy,
Curry's, Debenhams, John Lewis, Macy's, Nordstrom, Sears,
Target, Tesco, Top Shop and Walmart, along with e-tailers Amazon
and eBay.
Among its findings were that:
-- On Black Friday, mobile page views on U.S. retailer sites
were up by 388 percent on average and up by 160 percent on Cyber
Monday.
Interestingly, in the UK, where Black Friday is not a retail
event, page views were up by 40 percent on Friday, November 27
and up by 23 percent on Monday, November 30, signaling the start
of the Christmas / holiday shopping season in that country.
-- The U.S. online stores experiencing the biggest traffic
increases from mobile users during Black Friday were Best Buy
(792 percent), Walmart (740 percent), Sears (492 percent) and
Macy's (447 percent). In the U.K. the big winner was Argos with
a 395 percent increase.
-- Mobile traffic to Black Friday ad sites and Cyber Monday
shopping sites, including bfads.net and cybermonday.net,
skyrocketed nearly 100,000 percent during the week of November
24-30.

"Online Fraudsters 'Buying' More This Year"
-------------------------------------------
Retail Decisions' recent analysis of this year's U.S. sales on
Black Friday and Cyber Monday this year, indicates that, just as
legitimate sales were up over those in 2008, so too were those
made to online fraudsters.
According to Retail Decisions CEO, Carl Clump, the four most
fraud prone products were virtual and regular gift cards, the
Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, and the new Xbox game, "Call of Duty".
Mr. Clump said:
"Whilst online retailers witnessed a huge up-turn in sales this
holiday season, fraudsters are also 'spending' more, with an
average value of $248 per transaction online across the two
busiest days, 23 percent more than the average genuine customer."

"Baby Boomers Drive Technology Trends"
--------------------------------------
Research by Microsoft and AARP indicates that more than any
generation before or since, 'baby boomers' (those born between
1946 and 1964) are driving trends in technology.
In May 2009, Microsoft and AARP sponsored a series of focus
group-like discussions with baby boomers in four U.S. cities -
San Francisco, Phoenix, Chicago and New York - led by author and
futurist Michael Rogers. Participants discussed their
technology-related experiences, insights and expectations and
how their personal values shape the way they choose and use
technology.
Set out in a report,'Boomers and Technology: An Extended
Conversation' (http://www.aarp.org/boomertechnology) the
findings indicate that baby boomers are at the forefront of
technology design and adoption.
According to Rob Sinclair, director of Accessibility at
Microsoft:
"When new technology products enter the market - products that
are well-designed and can help create the life baby boomers want
- they are enthusiastic early adopters who help lead the way."
Moreover, baby boomers are both a demographic and economic force
to be reckoned with. In 2010, one-third of the U.S. population -
106 million Americans - will be aged over 50 and will control 50
percent of the country's discretionary spending.
According to Adam Sohn, director of Integrated Communications
for AARP (a membership and advocacy organization for people age
50 and older) baby boomers' values and ideals, more than their
purchasing powers, are impacting technology trends:
"Baby boomers want technology that reflects their values and
helps them express those values with greater purpose, meaning
and impact. While boomers are heavy users of technology today -
for everything from entertainment and news to online banking and
social networking - what's most exciting is the
technology-assisted world they are helping to create."
Michael Rogers says that baby boomers are less likely than
younger generations to take technology for granted yet neither
are they dazzled by technology. By embracing innovative
technology that "enhances their lifestyles and values, baby
boomers are having a tremendous influence on emerging
technologies."
"Baby boomers appreciate cool software and devices as much as
anyone, but they also believe technology has the power to help
bring about positive social change, and they want to make that
happen," said Sohn. "Boomers care deeply about social justice
and individual freedoms, and they see technology as a tool that
people can use to improve their lives and make the world a
better place -- from making society more democratic to helping
all of us participate more fully and more directly in the
decisions that affect us."
What kinds of technologies does Michael Rogers see baby boomers
adopting in the not-so-distant future? Among other things,
health-related technologies that help boomers monitor their
physical well-being, technologies to help them more pro-
actively care for their aging parents, and tools that enable
them to monitor and control energy use in their 'green' homes.

"Square Mobile Phone Payment System Launches in Private Beta"
-------------------------------------------------------------
Square (http://www.squareup.com) is a new mobile phone payment
system founded by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey. It has just
launched in private beta and may well be a viable alternative to
PayPal and other payment processors when it's released to the
general public in 2010.
Essentially, Square promises to give anyone the ability to
accept credit card payments without contracts, monthly fees, or
hidden costs. Rather, Square users will be able to use their
mobile phones, laptops or desktop computers to accept credit
card payment cards by swiping them with a small dongle that
plugs into the computer or phone audio jack.
Square, which is backed by Khosla Ventures, is currently testing
its service with a select group of companies, with plans to roll
out to more businesses next year.
