## Spread the free software philosophy by joining the new FSF
Community Team

The FSF is putting together a Community Team of supporters to spread the
free software philosophy in blogs, online press, and through
social networking sites. If you spend some time each day reading
popular blogs or mainstream press and you have a good handle on the debate
around software freedom, this could be a great opportunity.

* <http://groups.fsf.org/wiki/Group:FSF/Community_Team>

## FSF credit card (initially for US residents only) now with new images

If you haven't yet ordered an FSF credit card, there are three great new
card images to choose from:

* <http://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/new-credit-card-images>

More than 75% of our members and donors use a credit card when
donating to the FSF. Now you can add to that support by using a credit
card with an FSF logo on it.

(Please don't let the thought of supporting us encourage you to start
using a credit card if you don't already, or discourage you from
buying anonymously with big-brother-resistant cash.)

## Heroid Shehu is the GNU Generation member of the month!

Heroid has been working on a wide variety of projects. He is one of the
four developers on a new GNU/Linux distribution called RMS
GNU/Linux — based on Slax, but includes only free software. Another
project Heroid has been contributing to (through his GLUG) is
FreeKosovaArena, a game that includes some history of his home
country, Kosova.

* <http://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/gnu-generation-november-2009>

## First GNU Bucks awarded

The GNU Bucks bounty program is off to a great start. Two contributors
have already found instances of nonfree components in FSF-endorsed fully
free distributions.

* <http://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/first-gnu-bucks-awarded>

## FSF works with PayPal to the benefit of the free software community

The FSF recently discovered that PayPal had added a proprietary
software license to its User Agreement. Of course, the FSF couldn't agree
to those terms, so as soon as we learned about them, we
contacted PayPal to see if we could make other arrangements. The
company listened to our concerns, and specifically excepted us from these
conditions. But not only that: next year, PayPal is also
updating its user agreement to ensure that the free software community can
continue to receive and make payments without having to accept a
proprietary software license.

* <http://www.fsf.org/news/paypal>

## Free Software Foundation executive director Peter Brown reflects on
Bilski case

"This is a case that could have huge implications for developers'
ability to patent software, but software developers were nowhere to be
found, or if present, were out-numbered twenty to one by lawyers. There is
something rather perverse about the patenting of software when the vast
majority of those that practice the art of software
development want nothing to do with the patent system - and for good reason."

* <http://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/supreme-court-bilski>
## Windows 7 Sins e-mail signatures

Microsoft is using Hotmail signatures to spread Windows 7. We, as a
community, can spread the "Windows 7 Sins" campaign in like manner.

* <http://groups.fsf.org/wiki/Windows_7_Sins_mail_signatures>

## Acer discovered using crippled GNU/Linux

A few weeks ago, a free software supporter encountered an Acer netbook
that came pre-loaded with a distribution of GNU/Linux (provided by a
company called Linpus that offers distributions for the Asian market --
the netbook in question was sold in the Philippines) that lacked almost
every basic feature you would expect from a modern GNU/Linux
distribution.

xboard-4.4.2 zile-2.3.14

I'd like to specially note the first new release of patch in many years.
Thanks to the new co-maintainer, Andreas Gruenbacher, for reviving this.

To get announcements of most new GNU packages, subscribe to the info-gnu
mailing list: <http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/info-gnu>. Nearly
all GNU software is available from <http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/>, or
preferably one of its mirrors (<http://www.gnu.org/prep/ftp.html>). You
can use the url <http://ftpmirror.gnu.org/> to be automatically
redirected to a (hopefully) nearby and up-to-date mirror; for example,
<http://ftpmirror.gnu.org/gdb/> will redirect to the GDB directory on a
mirror.

This month we welcome Spencer Buckner, author of the new GNU package
gsegrafix, an advanced plot-generating program that integrates well with
GNU Octave.

We also welcome Benoit Hamet as the new maintainer of GNU phpGroupWare,
and Chris Simon as a new co-maintainer of GNU miscfiles, and Dhaivat
Pandya and Medhamsh Vuthpala as the new co-maintainers of GNU gtypist.

Thanks also to existing maintainers taking on additional packages: Andy
Wingo for volunteering to co-maintain Guile, Eric Blake for findutils, Jim
Meyering for diffutils and grep, Alfred Szmidt for miscfiles, and Paolo
Bonzini for grep.

Several GNU packages are looking for maintainers and other assistance.
Please see <http://www.gnu.org/server/takeaction.html#unmaint> if you'd
like to help. The general page on how to help GNU is at
<http://www.gnu.org/help/help.html>. To submit new packages to GNU, see
<http://www.gnu.org/help/evaluation.html>.

As always, please feel free to write to me, <karl@gnu.org>, with any
GNUish questions or suggestions for future installments.

SECRETS TO PEACEIssue 345-09December 11, 2009

Dear welcome,

* Short Identity Reminder

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Short Identity Reminder
This morning I have only a short time to
reflect before leaving for Toaastmasters.
So, I have no deep writing,
No lengthy introspection,
Just a couple of simple questions:
If you knew
Beyond any doubt
That every face you see,
Every soul who crosses your path
Is, in fact, God in the Flesh
Would you treat her
     any
differently?
If you knew
Beyond any doubt
When you looked in the Mirror
That you were staring
Into the Face of God
Would you treat yourself
    any differently?
Well . . . .
You are.
They are.
God is Omnipresent.
Divine Source flows in and through all things.
Love yourself today with all your heart and
soul,
For everything you are, is Divine Source.
Love your neighbor
As you love yourself.
P.S. I wrote this for myself. I still need
continual reminders.
The Disney Princesses Wear the Pants
5 Christmas Movie and TV Cliches That Need to Be Retired
Whether it's the annual sweater-filled, heartwarming holiday episode of a hit sitcom or a new animated half hour, there are certain plot line gimmicks that Hollywood producers think of as gifts that keep on giving. But really, they're not. They've got to stop. I propose a moratorium on the following five Christmas cliches.... Continue reading >>
The Disney Princesses Wear the Pants
Most movie princesses can be found in a billowing gown racing from a ball, locked in a tower or lying asleep awaiting their true love's kiss. These "damsels in distress," as they're often portrayed to be, are modern ladies who could give any liberated gal a run for her money. Like most strong, confident women, they wield an intangible power over the men in their lives. Heck, I'll say it: "They've got the boys whipped."...
    The expenses story just won't go away for MPs, the publication of yesterday's batch brought fresh embarrassment around Westminster and anger across the country. We'll be looking at how damaging the revelations are.
    As the row over the credibility of the pre-budget report continues there are rumours this morning about disagreements between Number 10 and the Treasury over its content. We'll have an exclusive Daily Politics Poll on who the public would most like to steer us out of the recession.
    The death of John-Paul Massey who was savaged to death by his family dog has yet again put the issue of dangerous dogs into the spotlight.
    We'll be speaking to Lord Baker who was responsible for the original Dangerous Dogs Act and ask if more needs to be done to crack down on the problem.
    And Giles will be here with the last Top of the Political Pops of the decade.
    "Mobile Shopping, Microblogging and Social Networking Popular"
    --------------------------------------------------------------
    Recent research by Novarra, which delivers mobile internet
    access to two thirds of U.S. mobile phone users and over one
    billion globally, indicates that mobile web users are
    increasingly using their smartphones for shopping, microblogging
    and social networking.
    Novarra's recent analysis of mobile shopping in the U.S. and
    U.K. on Black Friday (the day after the U.S. Thanksgiving
    holiday) and Cybermonday - November 27, 2009 and November 30,
    2009 respectively - reveal that traffic to a sampling of
    mainstream U.S. retailers increased by 388 percent on Black
    Friday and by 160 percent on Cyber Monday.
    Meanwhile, Novarra found a 1,068 percent increase in
    micro-blogging click-throughs during the first three quarters of
    2009 and a 190 percent increase in mobile social networking site
    page views.
    "How To Achieve Massive Success... With Very Little"
    'prerequisites' for success?
    expertise or other resources you CAN achieve massive success in
    your business with leverage.
    In fact, leveraging others - other people, other people's money,
    other people's expertise, etc - is pretty much WHY 'average'
    individuals become successful entrepreneurs.
    It's not due to brilliance... it's due to leverage.
    Which means that, if you know how to harness leverage, you don't
    need much to build your own successful Internet business.
    So how do you harness leverage?
    Drum roll please... introducing 'Simpleology 201 - The Simple
    Science of Leverage' - the brand new online course from
    Simpleology.
    And guess what? Not only does Simpleology 201 take you through
    the steps of harnessing the power of leverage... but you'll be
    pleasantly surprised by the price.
    What's more, if you download Simpleology 201 before the end of
    December 15, you'll get exclusive access to the audio recordings
    of Simpleology founder, Mark Joyner, conducting a training
    "MarketersRelief.com Membership Site"
    -------------------------------------
    By Brad Carroll
    I love Daniel McGonagle's MarketersRelief.com. No, it's not the
    be-all and end-all of internet marketing. But yes, Marketer's
    Relief has exactly what the IM newbie needs in order to start
    making money online!
    In fact, I would recommend Marketer's Relief over any other
    "Newbie Guide" out there (perhaps in conjunction with Dennis
    Becker's 5 Bucks a Day (also available in a cheap "Jr." version)
    as the ultimate newbie starter kit.
    Becker's ebook provides the right mindset and shows you how to
    leverage what you know. McGonagle's Marketer'sRelief.com gives
    you the skills to leverage, and helps put you in the proper
    mindset to boot.
    (Most of us honestly do not have the proper mindset when we
    start this out; otherwise we'd be a lot further along than we
    are. Getting our egos to accept this fact--and do something
    about it--pushes us through that membrane that separates failure
    from success.)
    For example, step one of McGonagle's the 10-step system is to
    call the man up on Skye and get coaching! Members are limited to
    an hour of voice coaching per week, but recief unlimited email
    coaching.
    This step also includes a download of McGonagle's 84-page IM
    Toolkit pdf, which by itself is probably worth the price of
    membership. This book also caontains a link to his 5 Steps to
    Success which is essential reading no matter what you want to do
    in life.
    Step 2 involves reading and watching some pretty hearty
    inspirational material. Many people might want to dispense with
    this but I highly recommend they go through with it, especially
    yhe PDF offered as "part three" of this step. Once the new
    member is doen with Step 2, he or she will have an attitude that
    can literally change his or her life!
    Further steps teach market research, setting up a website,
    supporting pages, list building, email marketing, joint
    ventures, SEO, and tracking.
    There are also sections on article marketing, outsourcing,
    copywriting, automated income sites, and some videos on
    different kinds of other money making sites. There are also
    videos on niche research, keyword research, competition
    evaluation, and blog building.
    Finally, McGonagle includes a 30 day traffic plan, and two
    videos on how to make money developing web presence for offline
    clients (something you'll be well-qualified to do once you've
    studied all the material in Marketer's Relief).
    For some reason, I still haven't taken Mr. McGonagle up on his
    coaching offer, so I can't report on that. I'll be doing that
    this month however, and will post a comment to this review just
    as soon as I'm able.
    Even without the coaching, however, this is a website that the
    serious newbie can use to propel him- or herself into serious
    action.
    Some will baulk at the $97 price tag, but honestly I think the
    IM newcomer will spend a lot more money in trial-and-error if
    they pass up on MarketersRelief.com.
    In closing, this site and Dennis Becker's 5 Bucks a Day (full or
    "Jr." version)and Daniel McGonagle's MarketersRelief.com should
    be all the education any internet marketing newbie needs to get
    started. And when is the last time you got a complete education
    for under $150 U.S.?
    "Don't Worry... Or You May Never Get What You Want"
    ---------------------------------------------------
    Worrying is surely one of the worst kinds of negative emotions.
    But apart from making you feel downright awful, here's why it's
    particularly destructive...
    In his audiobook, 'It's Not About The Money' Bob Proctor summed
    it up best:
    "Worrying is negative goal setting"
    That's right, when you are worrying about something, you are
    focusing all your mental energies on what you don't want. And,
    by definition, you are NOT focusing all your energies on what
    you DO want.
    Unfortunately, we tend to get what we preoccupy our minds
    with... so worrying about something is not just mentally and
    emotionally draining, but it can actually prevent us from
    thinking about what we can do - and taking the necessary steps -
    to get what we DO want...
    ...with the result that we get the very outcome we DON'T want!
    By all means plan for all contingencies, but say NO to worry...
    "How Two Losers Made Big Money From
    Affiliate Marketing Without Hard Work"
    ---------------------------------------
    Did you know that affiliate marketing was a 25 billion dollar
    pie in 2009?
    And did you know all indicators show that it will grow another
    13 percent next year despite one of the worst economic climates
    ever recorded?
    But here is the shocking part: 17 percent of online affiliates
    make $20k or more per month while the bottom 46% make next to
    nothing...
    And the difference isn't one of talent or intelligence, but
    rather the right information...
    Thursday, December 10, 2009
    Greetings Laff Lovers,
    The wife is planning a big holiday party next week, so that
    means last week she handed me a list of about 20 items that
    need fixing around the house.
    Things like...a hole in the drywall the kids made when they
    were playing "World Wrestling Federation", fixing the guest
    bathroom door that won't close properly, replacing a light
    switch in the kitchen that doesn't work, etc...
    She is under the delusion that with 20 or so friends and
    family in the house we should have doors that work and other
    luxuries like walls without holes in them.
    Who are we? The Hiltons?
    Anyway, I took one look at the list and called a great handy
    man I know by the name of Frank. Frank could build a house
    from the slab up with his eyes closed. He and I spent a ten
    hour day on Saturday taking care of about a decade's worth
    of repairs, him doing the work and me acting as a gopher
    between Frank and The Home Depot.
    By the time six o'clock rolled around we had hammered the
    last nail and turned the last screw. "Well, that about does
    it, TZ," he said. "This is going to be quite a bill. Are
    you sure there's nothing else you want me to take care of
    before I start adding it up?"
    I thought about it for a second... "You know the wife has
    been pretty needy lately. How much to wear her out and give
    me a little peace and quiet?"
    "Fifty bucks," he immediately replied.
    Consideringly,
    TZ
    As a potential juror in an assault-and-battery case, I was
    sitting in a courtroom, answering questions from both sides.
    The assistant district attorney asked such questions as: Had
    I ever been mugged? Did I know the victim or the defendant?
    The defense attorney took a different approach, however.
    "I see you are a teacher," he said. "What do you teach?"
    "English and theater," I responded.
    "I guess I better watch my grammar," the defense attorney
    quipped.
    "No," I shot back. "You better watch your acting."
    When the laughter in the courtroom died down, I was excused
    from the case.
    [FSF] An urgent update on our DRM campaign
    Posted: 10 Dec 2009 01:38 PM PST
    Dear Free Software Supporter,
    We're at a crucial moment in the fight against DRM. This year--thanks
    to the strength of the movement FSF has been building through its
    Defective By Design campaign--we defeated DRM on music. But DRM on
    movies, books, games, and other digital media is a bigger threat than
    ever.
    Free software is our best weapon against DRM. When you use free
    software, no company can use your hardware to control you. You're
    free to share whatever you want with whomever you want. And there are
    no artificial rules or restrictions: the only limit is our
    community's imagination and ingenuity.
    If you believe that the technology we use should be free from
    arbitrary restrictions, the best way to put that belief into action
    is by becoming an FSF member.
    The FSF can take on controversial campaigns like Defective By Design
    because it isn't built on the support of big companies and Silicon
    Valley CEOs: it's built on the support of activists like you. What
    gives us the independence to speak out--and the power to make our
    voice heard--is the support of our members and donors.
    The world *needs* a strong, principled, and uncompromising voice
    against DRM. Please support this work by becoming an FSF member.
    The FSF is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, and donations are tax deductible in
    the US.
    Here are some highlights from Defective by Design's work in 2009:
    -- 2009 was the year that music DRM died. But when Apple's iTunes store
    went DRM-free on music, we celebrated the victory without buying the
    hype: Apple still uses DRM on virtually everything else they sell
    (movies, TV shows, games, audiobooks, applications, and of course
    hardware).
    * <http://www.defectivebydesign.org/itunes-drm-free>
    -- Ebooks and ebook readers took off this year, and so did the threat of
    DRM on books. When Amazon deleted copies of George Orwell's 1984
    from hundreds of people's ebook readers, we collected thousands of
    signatures from readers, authors, public intellectuals and librarians
    demanding an end to ebook DRM.
    * <http://www.defectivebydesign.org/amazon1984>
    -- At the same time, we praised and promoted the work of authors and
    publishers who do the right thing and keep their books DRM-free, like
    Harlequin's new publishing house Carina Press, or the hundreds of
    publishers who tagged their work "drmfree".
    * <http://www.defectivebydesign.org/blog/1240>
    Through all this, Defective by Design is proud to be the only voice
    saying loud and clear that there's no such thing as "better" or
    "friendlier" DRM. No matter how many devices it works on, or what
    "features" it includes to trick people into accepting it, DRM robs us
    of our basic rights and insults human curiosity--it needs to go.
    This work is critical. The FSF is a member-supported nonprofit.
    Please consider donating or becoming a member today:
    Thanks for your time, and thanks for all the work you've
    done this year. We're proud of it, and we're proud of you!
    Sincerely,
    Holmes Wilson
