Open source router vendor Vyatta continues to go after bigger and bigger fish with its appliances, the latest being the Vyatta 3500 series, a 10 Gigabit Ethernet router designed for enterprise data center connectivity and the service provider edge. But opinions are mixed on just how many network engineers will be comfortable with using an open source product as their wide-area network (WAN) edge router.

Vyatta, which earns revenue by offering support for its open source router operating system and selling appliance versions of the routers on standard x86 server hardware, has launched its most powerful router yet with the Vyatta 3500 series. The device can process up to 3 million packets per second, manage as many as 8,000 simultaneous IPSec VPN tunnels, and forward data at a rate of 20 Gbps. It has some of the more baseline features for a data center router, such as a firewall, VPN and intrusion prevention. It also has a hot swap redundant power supply, four 1 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) ports, and four PCI Express slots that offer capacity for 16 additional 1 GbE or 10 GbE ports.

But the real highlight of the Vyatta 3500 is probably price-performance, where it blows Cisco out of the water.

Managing fiber optics with open source
Merit Network, a nonprofit regional wide-area network (WAN) that connects Michigan's major universities to one another and the rest of the world, made a major upgrade about five years ago from a carrier-based circuit network to a private, facilities-based 10 Gigabit Ethernet fiber optic network. The nonprofit even used a combination of open source and Adva technology to manage the network.

    Earlier this week I posted a quote on
    Facebook from Tony Parsons which said this:
    "To free people from the idea that they
    suffer, is the greatest compassion." I
    added my own thoughts which were, "Life
    happens. Suffering is always optional."

    Yesterday, I was putting together some notes
    for a talk at Toastmasters, this Friday, and
    I decided that this would be my topic. As
    soon as I started rehearsing this short
    speech, in my head, I heard someone in the
    audience say, "But Elliott, tell me how the
    people in Haiti have an option about
    suffering. They have just lost everything?"
    So, I began formulating ideas about how even
    people who have seemingly lost everything,
    through no action of their own, still have
    the power to let the event cause suffering or
    not.

    Fast forward to a small study group, I
    attended last night. We began discussing
    suffering and two of the members voiced their
    issues with my idea that "suffering was
    always optional." (That word always, nearly
    always gets me in trouble.;-)

    It felt so fun when one of these study
    partners stated, "I am thinking specifically
    of the people in Haiti. They had nothing to
    do with the crisis that is happening to them.
    What choice to they have but to suffer?" I
    was feeling my grin growing because of the
    inner dialogue I had, earlier in the day,
    when the second dissenter added, "If one of
    my children was lost or missing under the
    rubble, or if I lost a child or loved one,
    suffering would be unavoidable."

    I wanted to tell them that I had rehearsed
    this exact conversation as part of my speech
    preparation, but instead I opted to see what
    would come up in that moment.

    I agreed that to lose a child I would feel
    great loss and unimaginable pain. There is no
    doubt; at a physical level I am very attached
    to those I love. How I express that sense of
    loss is where the option comes in.

    All suffering is born as a control issue. My
    mind desperately wants to control everything.
    Left to its own device, it believes that it
    is keeping itself (me) safe by this attempt
    at control. All my suffering is created when
    my mind insists that "what is" should be
    something different.

    While I agree that suffering is the typical
    human response to loss, it is, in reality, a
    choice resulting from a breakdown in faith.
    It is a departure, even if temporary, from
    the belief that there is some higher form of
    intelligence running the Universe and that
    this Higher Power is benevolent.

    Unfortunately, many of our religions have
    taught that we are on this earth to make some
    temperamental God happy. When God is pleased,
    life is good. When God is unhappy, all hell
    breaks lose. I saw dozens of just such
    headlines following the Haiti earthquake, as
    there always is after any natural
    disaster. Haiti has some bad karma to clear,
    or Haiti has really pissed God off, in some
    way or another.

    This teaching, about a God that loves
    sometimes and is angry at other times, fuels
    the fires of suffering, and here is why:
    Those suffering ask different questions than
    those filled with faith.

    Suffering asks "Why?" or "Why me?"

    Faith says, "O.K. I know there is a blessing
    here. I am open to finding it."

    Suffering asks "How does this make sense?"

    Faith begins with the assumption that all is
    in Divine Order, whether it makes sense to my
    mind or not, and asks "What can I do to fully
    surrender my egoic-self to what is?"

    Suffering is always optional because the
    Truth of our existence is that we are That
    which watches the suffering. The me, that can
    suffer, is a separate self that only exists
    in the same mind which feels the suffering.

    I can, if I choose, watch suffering arise in
    my human mind, just as I can watch any other
    emotion, without identifying my-self as that
    which is suffering. I can see the pain of the
    loss; I can witness the frustration over the
    loss of control, without ever being sucked
    down into ground zero.

    Does that make sense?

    Please understand, I realize that knowing I
    have this capability and choosing in the
    moment to exercise this knowing can be
    entirely different things. I suffer when I
    think I am. In all thinking I separate
    my-self from Self. I do not suffer when I
    watch the "mind-invented" me from a higher
    perspective.

    In practice, this idea can really be as
    simple as a shift in focus from mourning a
    loss to thanksgiving for the blessings
    already enjoyed.

    It can be experienced as easily as dropping
    the resistance to what is and giving up the
    need to control or the fear that accompanies
    feeling out of control.

    The bottom line is this: Suffering ends when
    we change our minds. If suffering can end
    after forty days of grieving, when I have an
    epiphany and turn my loss over to God, it can
    just as easily end after forty minutes or
    forty seconds. The reason we suffer is
    because we believe we have lost something to
    which we have attached great value, not
    because it is mandatory to suffer.

    I am not suggesting that we stuff our
    feelings instead of suffering. Grieving is
    encouraged because it is far healthier than
    refusing to feel and thereby not addressing
    some apathetic response.

    Freedom from suffering is ultimately
    discovered when we find God in the midst of
    the suffering.

    If we never lose God, to begin with, there is
    no need to ever suffer.

    Final note: In no way am I attempting to
    imply that suffering is wrong or that those
    who choose suffering are incorrect. I am only
    seeking to point out, that at least in my
    life, suffering is a choice.
