    Does the Nexus One do it for you?

    The Nexus One handset has been hailed, by those able to handle one of the new units, as a rival to the iconic iPhone. But these are early days for a device--unfortunately labelled a superphone by Google--given the following the Apple handset has achieved in its relatively short lifetime.

    So is this new Google phone about to shake up the established smartphone market, or push forward and create a fresh battlefield where the iPhone might struggle to compete?

    In an attempt to boil down some of the reviews, here's a summary from people that have the job of punching the keyboard/screens of new handsets.

    • TechCrunch went somewhat overboard and said it is the best Android powered phone to date. It is the fastest and most elegant smartphone on the market today, and solidly beats the iPhone in most ways. The reviewer rated the screen as bright and alive, and an absolute pleasure to use. However, it criticised the Nexus One for being a battery hog, and poor even by iPhone standards.
    • CNET News was more relaxed and questioned whether the Nexus One is groundbreaking. However, it did rate the noise cancellation and voice control, both very cool, apparently; and the handset has nice integration with online services like Google Maps and Facebook. On the downside, the phone is not revolutionary the way the iPhone was.
    • Engadget believed the Nexus One is little more than just another Android smartphone, albeit a particularly good one - but not in any way Earth-shattering. The unit feels small and neater than the Apple handset, with the camera and Gallery app a big plus point. Negatives are the OLED screen which has problems with colour balance, and, while the phone is fast, it is not so much of a leap up from the Droid that they were expecting.
    • TechRadar dismissed the hype surrounding the Google device and rated it awesome. It thought the size of the handset is perfect for mobile internet and content usage, with Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor providing good performance. It criticised the Nexus One for not including multi-touch pinch and zoom, and the overall lack of cool tricks.

    I guess the result is that it's good, but not an easy winner over the iPhone. But does it need to be? Or, can Google bring sufficient added value in terms of apps and services to drag attention away from Apple's trendsetter onto something new, such as the Nexus One?

    1. Vodafone and Orange pull poor quality smartphones

    The complexities of today's smartphones are forcing operators to update their quality testing with the result that Vodafone and Orange have recently announced they will no longer be offering two devices from Nokia and Sony Ericsson.

    After having signed an exclusive distribution deal, Vodafone has revealed that it will not launch the Sony Ericsson X2 after the vendor slipped delivery dates from Q4/09 into early this year. Vodafone said that the delivery date of the Windows 6.5 device did not meet "pre-Christmas delivery due to a series of technical issues, and we have taken the decision not to go ahead with the launch as it no longer fits with our planned portfolio."

    This comes as yet another blow to Sony Ericsson, which last month saw its newly launched Satio dropped by Carphone Warehouse after software glitches prompted high returns. The manufacturer recently confirmed it was delaying the launch of the X2 until early January, claiming that the software worked satisfactorily, "but when we started integrating it with some of the network specific apps, it threw up a few issues that we're working to fix."

    Meanwhile, Orange has rejected Nokia's N97 Mini smartphone after experiencing a high number of returns. While the company declined to provide details, insiders claim that the device failed because of numerous issues, not just software problems, and was failing Orange's rigorous ongoing tests.

    The operator community will typically tolerate a returns rate of one in 10 devices--at best. It is believed that, while the N97 Mini passed initial testing, returns since launch in December have reached 20 per cent and forced Orange to withdraw the device.

    2. Orange/Barclaycard launch NFC credit card for Euro 10 purchases

    The European mobile payments industry clawed another fraction forwards with the launch by Orange and Barclaycard of a NFC-enabled credit card. The card, which has a purchase limit of €10 per item, earns the customer points to spend in major retail stores, as well as discounts on Orange products and tickets to events.

    However, while the credit card is evidence that the European mobile and financial services industries are eventually starting to work together, the mobile aspect remain limited. Customers will be sent a weekly and monthly text message detailing account balance and payment due dates, together with customisable SMS spending alerts, plus the ability to set spending caps and even block usage online, abroad and for high-value transactions.

    In an attempt to boost the significance of the announcement, Tom Alexander, CEO of Orange UK, said: "Today you pay for things by cash or on your credit card. Tomorrow, you'll use your mobile to buy the things you want, whether that's on the high street or the internet."

    While Orange might claim this launch as important, the European mobile payment services lag far behind those operating in Japan and Africa. Rivalries between operators and credit card issuers have delayed the implementation of anything other than the most simple service. Perhaps this NFC-enabled card might build trust between two industries not wanting to relinquish customer ownership.

    3. Nokia's fortunes improving, claim stock market traders

    Speculation that the troubled Nokia has turned the corner is being pumped up by option traders betting that the company will quickly return to profit. These stock market moves have pushed options on Nokia shares to almost double the level of bearish ones, the highest ratio in about a year, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

    The traders are banking that Nokia's earning will surprise the financial markets this month after the company reported its first quarterly loss in October. "Investors are betting that Nokia can't continue to get things wrong," said Michael Yoshikami, chief investment strategist at YCMNet Advisors in the US. "The iPhone has been a wake-up call for them and they are starting to show that they understand the market has changed."

    Some of this guesswork is in anticipation that Nokia will unveil new touch-screen phones and improved applications to win back customers, boosted by analysts expecting the company to earn €0.16 a share in the period ended last month, reversing a loss of €0.15 the previous quarter. "The fourth quarter is shaping up to be a little bit healthier than they thought," said Jeff Kvaal, a New York-based analyst at Barclays.

    Common among the analyst community is the belief that Nokia's Q4 shipment will be better than expected. One firm is raising its estimate for last quarter's device volume to 121 million, up from 118 million.

    The likelihood that Nokia's share price will undergo a recovery is seen as strong, given that the company had suffered a price fall of nearly 70 per cent from a six-year high of €28.60 in November 2007 after reporting it had lost market share to Apple and RIM.

    4. WiMAX goes live in Spain (does it open a wider door?)

    Clearwire has launched a WIMAX internet service in Malaga, Spain, that it claims covers the entire metropolitan area of the city and nearly 600,000 potential users. The launch is the company's first WiMAX network in Europe and is being marketed as providing download speeds of 3 Mbps to 6 Mbps with bursts to over 10 Mbps.

    Customers in Malaga will be able to access Clearwire's Instanet service with or without a service contract for a starting price of €29.90 per month. Customers who acquire a combination of services including Instanet Home and Instanet City will receive a lifetime 50 per cent discount on their bills.

    While the company's CEO, Bill Morrow, mentioned last week at CES that he was holding talks with satellite, telecom and consumer electronics companies about using its WiMAX high-speed wireless network, this effort seemed focused on the US.

    However, given the near-collapse of several European operators' backhaul network due to surging smartphone data traffic, Clearwire's ambition to sell wholesale capacity could become an attractive alternative.

    The opportunity of WiMAX in Europe--seen by the majority as slim, at best--has been boosted more recently over the concerns surrounding the lack of support for voice and SMS over LTE. The market research firm Frost & Sullivan (F&S) recently stated that the lack of consensus to resolve this issue could be an impediment to the large-scale roll out of LTE, thereby allowing alternative technologies such as Mobile WiMAX to take advantage of the situation, and significantly penetrate the European market.

    F&S claims that voice and text messaging currently constitute nearly 85 per cent of global mobile service revenues, and mobile operators need to band together to stop the fragmentation of voice and SMS delivery over LTE.

    5. German mobile revenues slide, and UK Christmas sales disappoint

    While mobile penetration in the German market increased to more than 130 per cent in 2009, analysts are expecting overall operator revenues to have declined by around two to three per cent, and are forecasting a similar fall this year.

    According to a report from Telecompaper, while non-voice revenues increased by €142 million over the year, this boost was not able to compensate for the continued pressure on voice service revenues from cuts to mobile termination fees and fierce competition.

    However, T-Mobile Germany was able to gain from the 2.2 million new subscribers (bringing the total to 108 million) and increased its leadership position by 0.8 per cent to over 36 per cent market share. Meanwhile, Vodafone Germany's weaker performance--particularly in post paid--contributed to a loss of 1.4 per cent to a market share below 34 per cent.

    The two smaller players, E-Plus and O2 Germany, both gained by growth in the prepaid segment, helping them to compensate for their drop in post paid and slightly increasing their share of total service revenues by respectively 0.4 and 0.3 per cent.

    The traditional year-end boost to handset sales failed to appear in the UK with numbers sold rising by 0.5 per cent to 633,000 units by week 49 compared with 2008, but they then showed a sudden dip in the last two weeks. According to one senior industry source, the slowdown reflected some operators reaching the end of their budgets.

    According to the market research firm GfK, sales for week 50 saw a fall of 2.7 per cent compared with 2008, to 655,000 units, while week 51 (ended 18 December), the last full trading week, recorded an even bigger fall on 2008 of 6.4 per cent to 726,000 units.

    This data goes against the bullish statements released by the UK operators that they had ‘the best Christmas ever', and with retailers reporting they had exceeded their 2009 targets. "Christmas was a successful trading period for Phones 4u, with positive sales numbers resulting in the business finishing 2009 ahead of targets," said trading director Scott Hooton.

    SPOTLIGHT ON... WiMAX could fill a big niche in the LTE era, finds Pyramid

    Although LTE will clearly dominate 4G network deployments over the next five years, WiMAX will continue thriving as a strong technology option for certain markets and applications, with worldwide subscribers growing nearly tenfold by the end of 2014, to about 53 million users, according to the latest report from Pyramid Research.

    Once thought of as disruptive of the mobile communications world, WiMAX has begun to carve out a tight niche tied to certain target opportunities, including emerging markets, rural and underserved areas that lack broadband coverage and businesses, notes Dan Locke, senior analyst at Pyramid Research and author of the report. "In contrast, LTE has quickly gained momentum; the world's largest MNOs have already chosen LTE, and some have begun aggressively deploying the technology this year," he says. "Going forward, LTE will be the most commonly deployed OFDMA-based standard, and since WiMAX (802.16e) and LTE (release 8) will provide similar real-world performance, ultimately the decisions of the largest WiMAX players may determine the fate of WiMAX," he adds.     JPMorgan analyst Imran Khan predicts that both search
    advertising and online display advertising in the United States
    will grow significantly in 2010. Khan sees U.S. search
    advertising growing by 13.2 percent to $16.6 billion (after just
    0.8 percent growth in 2009), whilst display ad sales are tipped
    to grow by 10.5 percent to $8.3 billion in 2010.

    Meanwhile, Imran Khan expects U.S. mobile advertising to grow 45
    percent to $3.8 billion, consisting of $3.2 billion SMS
    advertising, $253 million mobile display advertising, and $321
    million mobile search advertising.

    Khan attributes the rebound in display ad sales to an improving
    economy and a reduction in the glut of display ad inventory on
    higher quality sites. In this regard, such sites as AOL and CBS
    have removed their premium ad inventory from ad networks (which
    typically offload ad inventory at discounted prices).

    On top of this, advertisers, digital agencies and web publishers
    are all embracing more diverse, captivating and
    better-performing forms of display advertisements.

    Even so, you need only consider how much JPMorgan expects
    Internet marketers to pay for online ads to know which - out of
    search and display advertising - is considered more effective.
    According to JPMorgan, the average display RPM (revenue per
