MoT assesses NCR region to have 40,000 rooms before Commonwealth Games 2010

According to a PIB release, Saugata Roy, Minister of State Urban Development in a reply in the Rajya Sabha recently said that the Ministry of Tourism (MoT) has assessed that approximately 40,000 rooms under various categories will be developed in the National Capital Region (NCR) to meet the demand of the Commonwealth Games 2010. With the availability of rooms from existing and new hotels, guest houses, bed and breakfast establishments, as well as Delhi Development Authority (DDA) flats will be met.<br><br>The Master Plan for Delhi─2021 provided substantially relaxed norms for construction of guest houses in terms of road width, plot size and permissible area to increase availability of accommodation. Based on the information provided by the Government of Haryana, it has been assessed that a total of 6,632 rooms will be available out of new hotel projects in the NCR of Haryana.<br><br>The Master Plan for Delhi─2021 was amended to increase the Floor Area Ratio (FAR) for hotels from 150 to 225 excluding those hotels in Lutyens Bungalow Zone, Civil Lines Bungalow Area and existing on heritage structures to augment the availability of hotel accommodation.

Thiruvananthapuram─based Thomas Hotels and Resorts plans to open its first Ayurveda resort 'Sukh Shanthi' at Poovar in Thiruvananthapuram by October 2010. The Group will operate its Ayurveda brand 'Vaidyasala' in the upcoming resort. The approximate amount of investment for this project is Rs 15 crore. The will have 16 rooms and facilities for Ayurveda treatment. Centre releases more funds for tourism in North Eastern region in India: Union Tourism Minister

According to a PTI report, Kumari Selja, Union Minister for Tourism recently informed the Rajya Sabha that the Centre has released more money than that earmarked in the budget this year, in order to boost tourism in the North Eastern region. She said that during the current year, Rs 112 crore has been released so far as against allocation of Rs 100 crore in the budget this year. “North East region receives our utmost attention, ten per cent (union budget for tourism) is allocated for North East,” added Selja. <br><br>While development and promotion of tourism was primarily undertaken by the state governments, Ministry of Tourism provided financial assistance for projects under 'Infrastructure development of tourism destinations/circuits'. The number of domestic tourists visiting the North Eastern states increased from 44.57 lakh in 2006 to 51.45 lakh in 2008, while 39,000 foreigners visited the region in 2006 and 48,000 in 2008. <br><br>Selja added that of this, 36.17 lakh domestic tourist visited Assam in 2008, up from 32.69 lakh in 2006. Foreign tourists visiting the state rose to 14,000 from 11,000 in 2006.

Singapore Airlines to change its route network from this month

Singapore Airlines (SIA) is going to make changes to its route network in the coming months that will include frequency increases on several routes. The changes will also include the suspension of operations to Pakistan as well as Nanjing in China. The changes will begin from this month, with the Singapore─Moscow─Houston flight frequency increase to five per week from four, effective December 18, 2009.<br><br>From January 19, 2010, non─stop Singapore─Newark flights will return to daily operations from the current five─times─weekly. Munich will be a new destination in the SIA network from the start of the northern summer schedule late in March 2010. Flights will operate five times per week on a Singapore─Munich─Manchester route. Manchester services will be increased to five─times─weekly from thrice─weekly as a result.<br><br>From the start of the summer season in 2010, Colombo and Dhaka will each be served daily, up from five flights per week. Frequency to Mumbai and Delhi will be increased from March and June 2010, respectively. Flights will be operated twice─daily to both Indian cities, up from the existing 11─times─weekly.

Boeing 787 Dreamliner takes off for the first time

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner recently took to the sky for the first time, ushering a new era in air travel as it departed from Paine Field in Everett, Washington. After approximately three hours, it landed at Seattle's Boeing Field.&nbsp; The flight marks the beginning of a flight test programme that will see six airplanes flying around the globe, with the airplane's first delivery scheduled for Quarter Four of 2010. Mike Carriker, Chief Pilot, Boeing 787&nbsp; and Capt. Randy Neville, Engineering Pilot, Boeing 787 tested some of the airplane's systems and structures, as on─board equipment recorded and transmitted real─time data to a flight─test team at Boeing Field.<br><br>Powered by two Rolls─Royce Trent 1000 engines, the first Boeing 787 will be joined in the flight test programme in the coming weeks and months by five other 787s, including two that will be powered by General Electric GEnx engines. About 55 customers around the world have ordered 840 787s, making the 787 Dreamliner the fastest─selling new commercial jetliner in history.
