"LinkedIn Opens APIs To Grow Ecosystem"
---------------------------------------
Following the lead of Twitter, Facebook and others, LinkedIn -
the social network for professionals - is opening up its
application program interface (API) so that developers can
create third party applications that integrate with LinkedIn's
network.
LinkedIn is releasing 11 different APIs, which fall into three
different categories:
1. An API that lets developers create applications that allows
people to easily access their information, profiles, connections
and messages via oAuth login.
2. An API that allows developers to create apps that enable
people to take actions on their LinkedIn information, such as
messaging their LinkedIn contacts, posting updates, accept
contacts and so on.
3. An API that enables developers to embed LinkedIn search in
other applications. Apparently, LinkedIn search is hot, handling
over one billion queries already in 2009.
LinkedIn's vice president of search and platform products, Adam
Nash, told TechCrunch that LinkedIn had received around 4,000
requests from developers to integrate LinkedIn with their
applications. Further, according to Adam, LinkedIn regards the
release of these APIs as the initial step toward becoming "an
open ecosystem" and has plans to release further APIs in the
future.

"Milo.com 'Research Online, Buy Local'
Site Get $4 Million in Series A Funding"
-----------------------------------------
Milo.com (http://www.milo.com) is an innovative shopping site
that allows people to search the shelves of local stores for
items they want to buy. It's also just received $4 million in
Series A financing, in a round led by True Ventures and joined
by individual angel investors from Mint.com, PayPal, Yelp, and
YouTube and other Silicon Valley 'names'.
Milo.com's story so far indicates it has a winning model. Since
releasing its public beta in December 2008, the company has
grown from 2,000 users to an expected 1,000,000 a month, a 70
percent month-over-month increase.
With an estimated 87 percent of U.S. consumers researching
online and buying offline, Milo.com seems to be capitalizing on
a huge market opportunity. The company appears to be delivering
the goods too - Milo is now tracking an inventory of some 1.5
million products in real-time, and is adding about 185,000 items
per month. It has indexed over 42,000 stores across 30,000
communities in the United States.

"Almost 9 Out Of 10 Social Media Users
Turn To Internet For Health Info"
---------------------------------------
Research by Euro RSCG Life shows that nearly 9 out of 10 social
media users turn to the Internet for health-related information.
Euro RSCG Life surveyed 1,228 social media users, analyzing
thousands of verbatims and other conversations across blogs,
Twitter and online forums, then conducted a follow-up survey of
more than 520 social media users, with a focus on health-related
information.
The company presented its results at the recent United States
Food and Drug Administration hearing "Promotion of Food and Drug
Administration- regulated medical products using the Internet
and social media tools."
The firm found that:
-- Nearly 9 out of 10 social media users considered the Internet
a reputable source of health-related information and would
use it as a resource.
-- More than 80 percent had previously used the Internet for
information about a particular treatment and 44 percent said
they would also use social media for similar information.
-- Of those who had previously researched treatment information
on the Internet, 28 percent were comfortable with the level of
safety information currently provided, whilst more than a
third wanted to see more safety information.
-- Nearly one-third take the information they find on the
Internet to initiate a conversation with their doctor, while
another third use that information to develop their own health
plan.
-- Even when it didn't prompt a doctor-patient dialogue,
two-thirds of respondents regarded social media as a helpful
source of health information when they eventually spoke to their
doctors.

"How Video SEO Helps Boost Your Search Engine Rankings"
-------------------------------------------------------
A study by Spotzer Media indicates that businesses are more than
30 times more likely to receive customer attention when they
create and distribute a professional video via a process of
'video search engine optimization' or 'video SEO'.
Gordon Henry, President of Spotzer Media explains video SEO as a
process of (a) associating a video with certain, keyword
relevant data and (b) distributing the video plus data across
the Internet so it can be be picked up by Google and the other
search engines.
Spotzer Media's research indicates that small businesses with
properly optimized videos tended to rank highly on their most
desired search queries – defined by Spotzer to be Google
searches for category with location e.g. "skin treatment
Philadelphia PA".
Over 60 percent of local businesses with a properly optimized
video were on the first page of Google for such searches and 75
percent of those had a top five listing position.
Spotzer also found that small businesses which had implemented
video SEO significantly improved their rankings, with the
average 'findability improvement ratio' - the highest Google
ranking for the business before video SEO divided by the highest
Google ranking after video SEO – averaging over 30.
Such businesses experienced an even higher increase in
click-throughs and, once search engine users landed on the
business's website, higher average user interaction with the
page.
According to Simon Greenman, Managing Director of Online for
European Directories, which operates online Yellow Pages
directories in seven countries:
"Local businesses that have added video to their web pages are
seeing significant increases in user attention. Video is the
most clicked item on the profile page. Users naturally click on
and watch business videos on our sites. When they do, they
frequently call the businesses, and the businesses end up
benefiting by getting more new leads."
