The Pacific Asia Travel Association has signed a four─party agreement to establish a permanent tourism research forum for the Asia Pacific region in Guilin, China (PRC). The agreement was recently signed in Guilin at the UNWTO/PATA Forum on 'Tourism Trends and Outlook'. Signatories to the agreement include: Greg Duffell, CEO, PATA; Taleb Rifai, Secretary─General Ad Interim, UNWTO; Li Zhigang, Mayor, Guilin and Kaye Chon, Director, Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPU). <br><br>As per the agreement the Forum will 'provide an opportunity for policymakers, senior officials, researchers and industry representatives to take stock of the global and regional trends in tourism and the broader environment impacting upon tourism'.<br>&nbsp;<br>The proposed structure of this permanent Forum in Guilin is a two─day conference and a technical tour. Themes will vary annually and will be decided jointly by the four organisations. PATA and UNWTO will continue to be joint organisers of the Forum, working closely with the HKPU on all technical matters relating to each event.

According to a PIB release, informing the Rajya Sabha yesterday Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said that the number of pilgrims for Haj 2009 will be around 1, 21,500.&nbsp; The cost of travel per pilgrim for airlines has increased considerably mainly due to increase in input costs, increase in embarkation points etc. However, the amount charged per pilgrim as travel cost had remained static since 1994. <br><br>Patel also mentioned that the fare being charged per pilgrim for Haj 2009 is Rs 16,000.&nbsp; The total cost of Haj operations for the carriage of pilgrims this year is expected to be Rs 67,000 per pilgrim, out of which Rs 51,000 will be borne by the Indian government as subsidy. The following facilities are provided to the Haj pilgrims by Air India: Free baggage allowance of 45 kgs per pilgrim; Provision of ten litres of zam zam water free of charge to each pilgrim and carriage of same; Box meal is provided to the pilgrims on departure from India and arrival into Saudi Arabia; All other facilities as provided to the international passengers.

MoT to pay up to two per cent fee of architects for tourism projects

According to a PTI report, the Ministry of Tourism (MoT) organised a Workshop on World Class Tourism Infrastructure on August 19, 2009 under the chairmanship of Kumari Selja, Union Minister for Tourism. Leading architects, representatives of State Governments/State Tourism Corporations and other stakeholders attended the workshop.<br><br>One of the key recommendations of the workshop was that MoT may also pay the architect's fee over and above the cost of the project under the scheme of Product/Infrastructure Development for Destinations and Circuits. This will encourage the State Governments/U.T. Administrations to engage the architects for preparation of design and supervising the implementation of tourism projects to world class standards. <br><br>MoT accepted this recommendation and issued orders to meet expenditure on the architect's fee up to two per cent of the project cost. However, ceiling for Central Financial Assistance will continue to remain as Rs five crore and Rs eight crore for destinations and circuits respectively. Architect's services can be availed by State Governments/U.T.

The Association of Domestic Tour Operators of India (ADTOI) has decided to organise its fourth annual convention from March 18─19, 2010 at Hotel Ashok in New Delhi. ADTOI will be organising its convention in New Delhi for the fourth consecutive year. The Association is likely to decide the theme, relevant topics for the business sessions within this week. ADTOI will also organise an exhibition during the convention displaying new and traditional array of domestic tourism products to B2B customers from across India. This information was divulged by Rakesh Lamba, President, ADTOI. Lamba added that the Association will come up with convention packages which will include air tickets, accommodation for participants wherein they can buy stalls, advertisements and get themselves registered for the convention.

Kerala ties up with Google to promote its tourism through search and banner advertisements

According to an IANS report, Kerala has tied up with Google to promote its tourism through search and banner advertisements on the search engine.<br>This is the first time a state tourism department is partnering with the global search engine for such an advertisement campaign. Narasimha Jayakumar, Business Head, Google India said that the three─month campaign started last week and the responses had been 'tremendous'. &nbsp;<br><br>Jayakumar mentioned that now, if somebody sitting in Britain, US, Canada or India does a Google search on something related to tourism, Kerala Tourism's website link will appear on the right side of the page along with the search results. A click on that (link) will lead the person to receive all information on Kerala Tourism. He, however, declined to reveal the cost of the campaign, which started at a 'right time' as the state's tourist season has begun. “The beauty of our service is that Kerala Tourism will get ready information on responses at real time. We are certain that through this campaign, number of visitors to the Kerala Tourism website will increase by 40 per cent,” added Jayakumar.

Jammu and Kashmir govt launches Hover rafting to promote tourism sector in state

According to a PTI report, in order to give a fillip to the tourism sector in Jammu and Kashmir, the state government has introduced Hover rafting on River Tawi in the state. Nawang Rigzin Jora, Minister for Tourism and Culture, Jammu and Kashmir said that the state government is introducing new activities in a bid to fully tap tourism potential of the state. <br><br>Jora mentioned that the state government will encourage public─private partnership to promote tourism in the state, adding that, all logistic and financial support with incentives will be provided to persons interested in setting up their ventures in the sector. He added that the state government will consider extending the adventure sport on other rivers of Kashmir and Ladakh to encourage more domestic and foreign adventure lovers to visit the state.

Finnair expands mobile check─in service for departures from London and Manchester

Finnair has expanded its text message check─in service to include the cities of London and Manchester. The text message check─in is a service offered to Finnair Plus members, enabling frequent flyers to go directly to the departure gate, by─passing the normal check─in procedure, if they are only travelling with carry─on baggage. If the customer has baggage to be carried in the hold of the aircraft, this should be left at the Baggage Drop desk in the departure hall.<br><br>Markku Remes, Customer Experience Development Manager, Finnair said, “Our text message check─in service is popular among our passengers, as it speeds up airport formalities. Our aim is to incorporate continually more destinations in our network into this service.” <br><br>The service is automatically available to Finnair Plus members after their mobile phone number is updated in their Finnair Plus profile. Emirates to launch direct flights between Dubai─Tokyo effective March 28, 2010

Seven years since launching operations to Osaka, Emirates has unveiled plans to launch direct services to Tokyo effective March 28, 2010. Emirates will fly non─stop to Tokyo five times a week on every Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The service will be operated by a state─of─the─art Boeing 777─300ER aircraft offering a three─class configuration of eight First Class Private Suites, 42 Business and 304 Economy Class seats. <br><br>Flight EK 318 will depart Dubai at 02:50 hrs and reach Tokyo's Narita International Airport at 17:55 hrs the same day. The return flight EK 319 will depart at 21:40 hrs and reach Dubai at 04:35 hrs the following day. The service connects seamlessly to key centres in Europe, Middle East and Africa. <br><br>Tokyo will be Emirates' 102nd international destination, and closely follows the recent launch of operations to Durban and Luanda. With the introduction of flights to Tokyo, Emirates will offer two non─stop services between Japan and Dubai. At present, Emirates operates daily services to Osaka.
